Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Project

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when an external force traumatically injures the brain. TBI is a field in medicine with great unmet needs. It is a major cause of death and disability, leading to great personal suffering to victim and relatives, as well as huge direct and indirect costs to society. Strong ethical, medical, social and health economic reasons therefore exist for improving treatment.

INCF participates in the large European CENTER-TBI project “Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in TBI” that aims to improve the care for patients with TBI and identify the most effective clinical interventions for managing TBI. The project is part of a large global initiative InTBIR: International Initiative for Traumatic Brain Injury Research with projects currently ongoing in Europe, the US and Canada.

INCF is the lead coordinator for the development of standards and development and deployment of the informatics platform, in close cooperation with One Mind for Research and partners in the CENTER-TBI consortium

INCF’s role is to

  • Standardize and internationalize the clinical variables collected in traumatic brain injury studies.
  • Coordinate the establishment of an open standards informatics platform for the acquisition, storage and analysis of clinical data based on the common international clinical variables.
  • Facilitate community development of innovative methods of analysis and new techniques for the computational characterization of TBI
  • To provide international coordination in relation to project collaborations and development of international standards. In particular, coordinating the allocation of OneMind resources for the implementation of aspects of the CENTER-TBI project and working with OneMind to develop the CENTER-TBI platform with a vision to future use cases in other domains.

The over-all goal is to develop a next generation open standards-based platform that supports advanced large-scale collaborative analytics and model building. Such a platform will also provide a model for future clinical studies on brain diseases and disorders.
